Sigmon Named Assistant Wrestling Coach
PEMBROKE – Newly hired UNCP head
wrestling coach Othello Johnson has announced the
addition of Byron Sigmon to his coaching staff as
an assistant for the 2011-12 season.
Sigmon will take over the roles formerly occupied by Johnson, who
was hired as UNCP’s sixth wrestling coach in August.
Sigmon was a four-year letterwinner at UNC Greensboro and, as a
senior, was the 2011 Southern Conference Runner-Up at 174 pounds.
He also competed at the 2010 University World Team Trials in both
freestyle and Greco-Roman formats at 84 kg and was an all-American
in freestyle in 2010 at 79 kg. As a junior, he was an NCAA
qualifier and Southern Conference Champion at 174 pounds. He was a
conference champion as a freshman as well as a national qualifier
at 165 pounds, and he was a national qualifier again as a
sophomore.
The Claremont native was a three-time state champion at 152 pounds
in the state of North Carolina and was a four-time state finalist.
He was a NHSCA Wrestling National Champion in 2005 and was a NHSCA
Junior National All-American after finishing fourth in 2005.
He took home runner-up honors at the 2004 Cadet Freestyle
Nationals and an eighth-place finish at the 2004 Cade Greco-Roman
tournament, earning all-American honors in the latter. The Bandys
High School alumnus was also the 2004 Ohio Tournament of Champions
Champion at 152 pounds and finished eighth at the same tournament
in 2003.
He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in recreation and
sports management from UNCG in 2011. He is pursuing a
master’s degree in physical education at UNCP.
