Brackett Named PBC Freshman Of The Year

AIKEN, S.C. – UNCP freshman guard Shahmel Brackett was named the Peach Belt Conference's Freshman of the Year for the 2009-10 season for his efforts this season wearing the Black & Gold, it was announced Friday evening at an awards banquet in association with the PBC Tournament Championship.

A native of Florence, S.C., Brackett becomes only the second player from UNCP to earn this honor joining former Brave Frank Smith who won the award for the 1993-94 season, Pembroke's second year in the conference.

“I'm very happy for Shahmel and just want to say congratulations for this well-deserved award,” said UNCP head coach Ben Miller. “We asked a lot from him as a freshman and he stepped up and delivered in a big way.”

Brackett was ranked 11th in the PBC in scoring and led UNCP with 14.5 points per game. He was also second on the team in assists and third in blocked shots. Brackett started in 24 of 26 games for UNCP and scored a career-high 29 points against Francis Marion on Feb. 3.

He also posted double digit points in 19 contests including six 20-point performances.
