PEMBROKE – After nearly averaging a triple double in leading the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team to a pair of wins over teams that qualified for postseason play last season, sophomore Quamain Rose has been named this week's UNCP Athlete of the Week, athletics department officials announced Tuesday evening.
Rose, a Whiteville native, averaged 19.5 points, 11.0 assists, 7.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals in pacing the Braves to a 2-0 record at the UNCP Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The 2012-13 PBC Freshman of the Year and PBC Player of the Week selection matched a career high with 26 points in a Friday win over Limestone, and came within two rebounds of tallying a triple double with 10 assists as well.
Saturday's outing against Belmont Abbey proved just as fruitful for Rose as he turned in 13 points, 12 assists and six rebounds in a 100-87 win over the Crusaders. He finished the weekend with a 16-for-42 (.381) success rate from the field, including a 5-for-21 (.238) mark from the perimeter. He had just three turnovers in the two games against his 22 assists and eight steals.
Rose, who currently leads the league in assists (31) and steals (18), has started in all 32 games since the start of the 2012-13 campaign and has posted averages of 12.9 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game. He has a career field goal percentage of .412 (171-for-415) and has drained nearly 76 percent (99-for-131) of his shots from the free throw line.
