WHITE LAKE – The UNCP men's golf squad shaved 13 strokes off their opening round score, but the deficit after the first round was too much to overcome in finishing seventh at the 11th Annual Carolina Sands Intercollegiate at Carolina Sands at White Lake.

The Braves recorded the third-lowest score of the second round but were unable to move up position in the team standings and finished outside of the top five teams for just the third time this year.

Belmont Abbey recorded an eight-under-par 280 on the second round to cruise past the 12-team field by 10 strokes after finishing the first round tied for first with Lenoir-Rhyne. The Crusaders' Peter Tarver Jones captured medalist honors over Coker's Ben Conroy with a birdie on the fourth playoff hole at the par-72, 6,925-yard course.

Five juniors made up the UNCP squad and they were led by Scott Lambert, who recorded a three-under-par 141 (71-70) to lead the Braves and finish in sixth overall.

Jonathan McCurry followed a first-round 74 with a 72 on the second to finish in a tie for 21st overall and Jordan Walor rebounded from an opening-round 76 with an even-par 72 on the second to finish in a tie with Carson Lanier and two other golfers at four-over-par. Lanier shaved six strokes off his first round total with a one-under-par 71 on the second 18 holes.

Parker Houston rounded out the UNCP team scores with a 77-76 line that left him in a tie for 49th overall.

Sam Stephenson led the Braves that were competing as individuals with a two-round 146 (75-71) to finish in a tie for 21st overall.

Scott Colley (77-73), Ian Locklear (75-75) and Joe Mullen (74-76) each finished in a tie for 38th overall after recording a two-day total of 150.

Freshman Michael Mullmann finished out the UNCP scores with a 153 (79-74) to finish tied for 49th.

The Braves will next be in action on April 11-12 at the Peach Belt Conference Championships at Savannah Quarters Country Club in Savannah, Ga.
