Walor, McCurry Tie For First; UNCP Captures Magnolia Invitational
ORANGEBURG – All-American Jordan Walor carded an even-par 71 and captured his eighth career medalist honor via a scorecard playoff to help ninth-ranked UNCP to its second consecutive tournament championship on Tuesday afternoon at the Magnolia Invitational in Orangeburg, S.C.
Walor (72-68-71/211) won the scorecard playoff with West Georgia's Bryn Powers and teammate Jonathan McCurry (74-63-74) who birdied the 16th hole to force the three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard. Michael Mullmann (73-76-67/216) had the best round of the day for the Braves as the sophomore booked a 4-under-par and career-best 67 to finish the event in a tie for sixth. Scott Lambert (75-76-73/224) tallied his best round (73) of the event to exit the tournament in a tie for 20th, while Carson Lanier (73-75-82/230) concluded in a tie for 33rd.
The performance helped hand the Braves (292-282-285/859) their third tournament championship of the season and their second-straight honor after also winning last week's Richard Rendleman Invitational. The Black & Gold registered two of the program's top-10 rounds in winning the title and, likely, posted the best three-round tournament score in school history.
No. 17 USC Aiken (297-292-278/867) posted the best team round of the event on Tuesday, but still finished eight strokes back of the lead in second place, while 25th-ranked Barton (295-288-288/871) concluded the event in third place. Tournament-host and 33rd-ranked Newberry (295-296-297/888) finished fourth, while Coker (298-296-298/892) was 33 strokes off the pace in fifth.
UNCP will be in action again, March 19-20, when it heads to Eatonton, Ga., to take part in the Bobcat Invitational.
