Braves Record First Conference Win Over Hurricanes, 2-0
PEMBROKE – The UNCP men's soccer team stunned Peach Belt Conference opponent Georgia Southwestern on the offensive and defensive side of the ball and the Braves shut out the Hurricanes, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds in Pembroke.
The Braves (7-2-0, 1-2-0 PBC) tallied 23 shots with 11 on goal while holding the Hurricanes (2-6-1, 0-2-0) to a mere three shots with one on goal. UNCP began its scoring campaign with two goals less than 15 seconds apart in the 31st minute.
Senior defender Stuart Rodgers captured the first goal of the game as he received a pass from outside the box which bounced off several defenders before landing in front of his feet for an open line to the back of the goal. Moments after regrouping on the field from Rodger's goal, Sean Hoek made his way to the down field and posted the second goal of the game from 25 yards out in the center of the box.
With nine minutes elapsed in the second half, UNCP played a man down after an injury but managed to continue the offensive strike on the Hurricanes' goal and the defensive stop in Braves' territory. The Black and Gold denied the Hurricanes any shots in the first half as UNCP entered halftime outshooting Georgia Southwestern 13-0.
Leading the Braves in shots were Rodgers and Hoek who tallied five apiece, while Sam Miles totaled four. Goalkeeper Ryan Hanson grabbed one save in his 90 minutes of action, while Georgia Southwestern's keeper Cade Jones posted seven saves as the team added two.
"We could have been up with more goals but we didn't start out with urgency," said UNCP head coach Phil Hindson. "The back four defenders did very well but overall the win was not good enough for us."
UNCP will continue its home conference matchup on Wednesday when it takes on USC Aiken (2-5-1, 0-1-0) at Varsity Grounds with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
