Braves End Day Two At Weems Baskin Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. – In the final day of competition at the Weems Baskin Invitational, the UNCP men's track and field team was led by sophomore Duane Thompson with a ninth place finish in the long jump and AJ Davis Jr. with a 15th place finish in the hammer throw.
Thompson posted a new personal best in the long jump with a mark of 6.74m on Friday, while Davis threw 49.48m in the hammer on Saturday. Davis recorded a new personal best in the shot put with a mark of 13.50m for a 20th place finish, while Eric Upchurch finished 19th with a throw of 13.58m for a new personal record.
Senior Zach Bayless led the Braves in the 1500m run with a new personal best time of 4:19.61 as Andrew Nguyen finished 27th with at time of 4:21.53 for his personal best.
Cedric Wilson crossed the finish line with a time of 2:06.19 in the 800m run to collect a new personal best with a 40th place finish. Freshman Jeremy Judd opened up his first season of collegiate competition in track in the 800m and 1500m runs.
Devan Cureton and Jameel Joyner finished 32nd and 33rd, respectively, in the 200m dash. Joyner led the Braves in the 400m dash with at time of 51.86 seconds for a 33rd place finish. Freshman Nick Tamburo notched a 36th place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 52.03 seconds.
In the discus throw, Davis finished 27th (39.16m), while Upchurch finished 32nd overall (37.38m).
The Braves will compete again on Friday in the first day of action at the Raleigh Relays hosted by NC State.
