20 Questions With Kevin Clancy

UNCPBraves.com recently had the change to sit down with junior runner Kevin Clancy to learn of his opinion on a variety of topics ranging from what he refuses to eat to how he wants to be remembered when he leaves Pembroke. The following 20 questions are a part of a new feature at your official home for UNCP Athletics.

Clancy, a Washington native, is in his second year on the men's cross country team. He recently entered into the UNCP record books with a time of 26:00 in the 8K while setting his career and personal best. This season he has been one of the top-5 finishers for the Black and Gold placing fourth in the UNCP Invitational 8K race with a time of 27:39.47 to help the Braves place first overall. The Braves have been regionally ranked in the top-10 this season with help from runners like Clancy.

Kevin started his collegiate career at Highline Community College where he ran for only one year before deciding to transfer to UNCP. Since he began at UNCP, he has been a strong contributor to the men's cross country team, placing 19th at the PBC Championships where he also placed fourth among his UNCP teammates with a 27:57.22 time in the 8K. He has earned academic all-American accolades for two consecutive years.

I Came To UNCP Because: It made the most sense. I applied to a few different universities, but UNCP had the major I was interested in, it was affordable, and I love the campus when I came for my visit.

My Heroes: My parents. Without them I wouldn't be anywhere close to where I am today.

One Thing People Don't Know About Me: I'm from Washington State and I have two different colored eyes.

My Dream Job Would Be: A high school athletic director, head of the physical education department, head cross country coach and distance track coach in California.

The Most Famous Person I've Ever Met: Kevin Costner…well he waved to me at least.

Most Thrilling Experience: Having a break out race and qualifying to USA Track and Field Nationals in the steeple chase.

I Refuse To Eat: Tomatoes. They can be sliced on a sandwich, but I can't eat one whole without wanting to spit it out.

Best Website To Kill Time: Athletic.net. I could be on there for hours looking up recent cross country and track results.

What Song On Your IPod Would Surprise People?: Apparently there was a song by Rascal Flatts on my IPod that surprised my girlfriend Livia. I really don't know how it got on there. I think she might have put it on there.

Best Sit Down Restaurant: Applebees. I couldn't tell you why, but I LOVE that place.

This Item Must Go On Road Trips With Me: Well, I learned this one from experience and traveling across the country was more enjoyable with Livia in the car with me. Although I wouldn't consider her an item, she's a must next time I drive back home.

In 10 Years, I Will Be: Coaching a state champion cross country team.

Words Or Phrases You Overuse The Most: "Definitely," It just fits so well in most sentences.

I Am Most Proud Of: Pardon Ndhlovu, Megan Carney, Chris Schroll, and Livia Mahaffie for being so successful while being so far away from home. I know how tough it can be at times.

If You Had Your Own Energy Drink, What Would It Be Called?: Energy by Kevin

If I Could Trade Places With Someone For A Day, It Would Be: Pardon so I can run that fast for that long…crazy!

What I Love Most About UNCP?: I love that I have been given a great opportunity here at UNCP. I have a great coaches and teammates to help me improve my running game along with great professors to help me graduate with my degree.

My Advice To Youngsters Would Be: Set short-term, realistic goals to reach your long-term goals whether they apply to their academics, athletics, or life.

What Is One Thing You Want To Happen Before You Leave UNCP?: I would like our men's cross country team to qualify for nationals. It would be awesome to say I represented UNCP on the national level.

How Do You Want People At UNCP To Remember You?: I would like to be remembered as a 3-time academic all-American and top 10 in the record books.
