UNCP Sweeps Chowan To Set Wins Record

PEMBROKE – In a doubleheader sweep of Chowan on Saturday afternoon the Braves set the new single season record for wins in a season at UNCP with a 12-0 victory in five innings in game one and a 4-1 decision in game two to improve to 33-10 on the year while also improving to 22-2 at LRA Softball Field.

The previous record was set back in 2005 when the Braves went 31-20 on the season. Pembroke tied the record on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Mount Olive.

UNCP’s Katie Linkous, Jelena Shaw and Anna Williamson each collected three hits over the course of the two games with Williamson driving in two runs and scoring another four. Chowan (14-24) managed only one run on four hits over the two-game set with Pembroke pitchers striking out 15 of the Hawks’ batters.

Martika Elmore, Candace Evans and Whitney Landwermeyer each struck out five batters on the day with Elmore (16-3) and Evans (13-3) each picking up a victory.

In game one the Braves exploded for nine runs one nine hits in the bottom of the first to take a commanding 9-0 lead. Pembroke would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 12-0 lead and would eventually by that score via the run-rule in five innings.

Elmore would earn the victory for UNCP allowing only one hit in four innings of work. Shellie Wimpey (7-13) was credited with the loss for the Hawks allowing 12 runs on 12 hits in four innings. Chowan committed three errors in the game, all in the first inning.

UNCP scored a run in the bottom of the first to open up the scoring in game two. The Braves added three runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead after three innings. Chowan finally got on the board in the top half of the sixth to avoid the Hawks second shutout of the day.

The final would be 4-1 as the Braves took game two of the doubleheader. Evans got the win going five innings allowing only one-hit in five innings of work. Krystle Thomas was credited with the loss for Chowan giving up four runs on six hits in six innings.

The Braves will take on Limestone tomorrow in a doubleheader at LRA Field. The Saints defeated UNCP 3-1 earlier this season in Pembroke as part of the East Carolina Softball Classic.
