UNCP Drops Two To Augusta State

AUGUSTA, Ga. – UNCP dropped two games on the road on Saturday afternoon to Peach Belt Conference foe Augusta State at Jaguar Field as ASU erupted for 15 runs in the doubleheader to sweep the Braves, handing the Black & Gold their first PBC series loss of the season.

UNCP (14-18, 5-5 PBC) could not get its offense going, scoring only two runs on the day. The Jaguars (22-15, 5-5 PBC) run-ruled the Braves in game one, winning 9-1 in six innings, and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 win in game two.

ASU's Jennifer Miller earned the game one victory going three and one-third innings allowing only one run on two hits. Whitney Landwermeyer (9-8) was credited with the loss for UNCP, also going three and one-third innings allowing seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits. The Braves' defense didn't help out Landwermeyer's campaign, committing five errors in six innings of play.

Emily Corish brought home the win in game two for the Jaguars giving up only one run on three hits in four innings of work. UNCP's Candace Evans (3-7) got the loss allowing six runs (all earned) and seven hits in five innings for the Braves.

UNCP will be back in action on Tuesday when the Braves welcome non-conference foe Mount Olive to LRA Softball Field for a two-game set beginning at 4 p.m. The Jaguars will travel to Dahlonega, Ga., to take part in the Moe's Classic Softball Tournament, playing Flagler and Valdosta State next Saturday and closing out the event with Flager once again and host North Georgia on Sunday.

In game one the Jaguars got on the board first, scoring two runs in the top of the opening frame. UNCP cut the lead to one in the top of the third when centerfielder Morgan Patrick homered to center to make the score 2-1. ASU would post two runs in the bottom of the third and then three more in the bottom of the fourth to push its lead out to 7-1 after four.

The Jaguars scored two run in the sixth to run-rule the Braves, with Augusta's Kayla Adams singling in the game-winning run. ASU would win the game 9-1 as the Jaguars picked up their 21st victory of the season.

Augusta jumped on the Braves early in game two scoring four runs in the first inning, increasing its lead to 6-0 when the Jaguars plated two more runs in the fourth. UNCP loaded the bases in the top of the fifth and posted a run when Courtney Hill singled to right to drive in Lauren Marshall from third. However, the Braves would fail to score anymore runs the rest of the way as they dropped their 18 the game of the season.
