Braves Use Long Ball In Game One, Falcons Bounce Back Early In Game Two
MISENHEIMER – In its first road action of the season the UNCP softball team split a doubleheader with Pfeiffer University at Jack Ingram Field on the campus of the Lady Falcons on Thursday afternoon in non-conference play as the Braves moved to 3-2 on the year.
The Braves scored a 5-2 win in the opener behind a Jelena Shaw three-run homer while the Lady Falcons used a 2-for-2 nightcap and pair of RBI from Sarah Waylock for a 5-1 victory. Pfeiffer moves their record to 2-4 on the year.
The Lady Falcons jumped on the board in the bottom of the first as three straight singles began the frame. Kylee Nichols started off with a single to left, Amber Johnson followed with the exact same hit while Melanie Conklin dropped down a bunt for a base hit. Waylock would score the first of her three RBI on the day plating Nichols with her fielder's choice.
Pfeiffer carried that 1-0 lead into the fifth until the Braves put four on the board grabbing a three-run lead. Morgan Patrick started off with a strikeout, but reached first on a wild pitch by Shelby Brown. After a sacrifice bunt by Ashley Harrell, Patrick would scamper to third on another errant pitch in front of Jamie Burwell's walk. Shaw then connected on the first pitch with her blast to left, putting Pembroke up 3-1. Later in the inning, Holly Berry would score Courtney Hill with her single to right.
Each team traded runs in the sixth as Shaw was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded registering her fourth RBI of the game while pinch-runner Lindsey Phillips came around for Pfeiffer on an errant outfield throw by Burwell.
Caroline Newman secured the win for the Braves going the distance allowing two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Nichols finished the opener with three hits in four plate appearances while Johnson concluded 2-for-4. Hill and Berry each had a pair of hits for UNCP.
Pfeiffer didn't waste any time in the night cap putting a couple of runs on the board in each of the first two innings. In the first, Waylock delivered with a two-run single to right-center that scored Johnson and Mariah Chalk. Johnson reached on a single to right while Chalk put herself aboard with a double down the right-field line.
An inning later, the Lady Falcons found themselves up four after Bryttny Kreshka reached on an infield single and later scored on a wild pitch by Newman, who also started game two for the Braves. Later in the frame, with Johnson at first and Nichols at third, the two would execute a perfect double steal that would give the hosts their four-run advantage.
One of Pfeiffer's two errors in the second contest allowed Pembroke to tally their lone run a half-inning later as Shaw registered the unearned run on a Lady Falcon infield throwing error. Shaw reached with a one-out bunt single. Nichols would plate the game's final run in the fourth on a UNCP throwing error stealing third and scoring on the errant throw.
Game two was called after five innings due to darkness allowing for the Lady Falcons to snag their first home win of 2010. Chalk earned the victory by tossing five frames, allowing the unearned run on four hits.
