Wilson’s Double Puts UNCP Atop Lander, 2-0

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Freshman Karlee Wilson doubled to deep left center field to score the game-winning run for the UNCP softball team in the first game of the doubleheader against Peach Belt Conference opponent Lander, 2-0, on Saturday to extend the winning-streak to four games in the series.

UNCP (12-16, 1-2 PBC) clinched its first win in conference action by using three hits from Wilson, Morgan Davis and Jamie Burwell. Lander (15-16, 1-6) registered four hits from four different athletes.

Natalie Klemann (4-4) spent all seven innings in the middle for UNCP to collect the shutout victory. Klemann finished the game with six strikeouts including three in the first inning alone.  Hayley Leissner (8-9) struck out five and walked three batters in all seven innings for the Bearcats. Leissner allowed two unearned runs on three hits as she suffered the loss.

The Lady Braves left four runners on base before Holly Berry singled to the shortstop and rounded the bases on the double by Wilson to give UNCP the 1-0 lead in the sixth inning. UNCP returned again in the seventh as Ashley Harrell reached first after being walked. Harrell stole second before Burwell sent Harrell home and reached first on the throwing error by Leissner to give the Black and Gold the final score of 2-0.
