Lady Braves Drop Series To USC Aiken, 5-1

PEMBROKE – The UNCP softball team suffered a 5-1 loss in game two of Wednesday's doubleheader with USC Aiken at LRA Field as the Pacers clinched the series sweep and UNCP fell in its sixth-straight loss.

UNCP (14-23, 3-9 PBC) totaled seven hits as Ashley Harrell and Karlee Wilson each posted two hits piece, while Wilson had the RBI and Kristen Hobbs totaled UNCP's only run.  USC Aiken (19-9, 8-4) notched eight hits as three athletes registered two hits apiece.

Natalie Klemann (5-7) pitched 5-1/3 innings before being relieved by Starr Gilley, however, Klemann reentered the game for Gilley and complete the 1-2/3 innings. Klemann gave up six hits and two earned runs but struck out seven in the process. Gilley allowed three earned runs on two hits.

Samantha Lemm (4-2) completed six innings for the win giving up one earned run on seven hits before India Kornegay stepped in the middle for the final inning.

USC Aiken's Nicole Borden reached on a double in the fourth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to give the Pacers the 1-0 lead. In the fifth, USC Aiken grabbed another three runs as Kaitlyn White advanced to second on a double, Whitney Clary walked and Kayla Denham reached on a fielder's choice. White and Clary scored on an error and pass ball, respectively, before Borden sent Denham home on a single through the left side.

UNCP posted its only run in the sixth inning as Hobbs singled through the left side to reach first, was moved to second on a fielder's choice and scored the Lady Braves' only run on a single up the middle by Wilson to trail the Pacers 4-1. Finally in the seventh inning, Lindsey Jones collected the final run for USC Aiken.

The Lady Braves will finish out the rest of their 2012 schedule on the road beginning with North Georgia (31-7, 5-3 PBC) on April 3. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
