Francis Marion Downs Two Run Tater For Win Over UNCP

FLORENCE, S.C. – Francis Marion's Olivia Ferguson sent her first at-bat of the game soaring over the left field fence to score the first two runs of the contest for the Patriots as Francis Marion grabbed the 3-0 shutout victory in the first game of the doubleheader over visiting UNCP on Thursday afternoon.

UNCP (14-24, 3-10 PBC) notched the first hit of game in the top of the first inning as Ashley Harrell reached on a single through the left side, but only saw two additional hits through the rest of the game. Francis Marion (27-12, 5-6) registered six hits as Sara Broderick led the team with two as Ferguson tallied two RBI and two runs.

Starr Gilley (5-13) went a complete six innings giving up all three runs (two earned) despite striking out six in the process. Kayla Ellingsen (10-5) allowed three hits and struck out four batters for Francis Marion.

Kaytee Wilson led off the second inning with a single to centerfield but was left on base with the conclusion of the inning.  Jamie Burwell sent UNCP's third hit through the left side on a single in the fifth inning, but UNCP struggled to score a run.

With a 2-0 lead going into the sixth inning, the Patriots scored their final run as Ferguson reached on a fielder's choice and moved around the bases on a UNCP error before scoring on Ellingsen's double along the left field line.
