Hurricanes Down UNCP With Runs In Final Innings, 4-0
AMERICUS, Ga. – Mason Moreland scored two of the four runs for Georgia Southwestern including the game-winning run in the first inning to lead the Hurricanes ahead of the UNCP softball team, 4-0, in the first game of the doubleheader in Peach Belt Conference play.
UNCP (15-31, 4-15 PBC) received one hit each from Brea Hartley, Holly Berry, Kristen Hobbs, Kellie Van Dyke and Karlee Wilson. Georgia Southwestern (22-29, 4-15) managed six hits as Moreland led the team with three hits, two runs and one RBI.
Starr Gilley (5-17) pitched all six innings for the Lady Braves and gave up four runs (two earned), while striking out six batters. Jessica Martin (10-8) spent the first five innings in the circle for the Hurricanes and gave up four hits and two walks, but clipped a trio of strikeouts until Casey Burns came into the game to relieve for the final two innings.
Hartley began the first inning for UNCP with a single to center field but was caught stealing before Georgia Southwestern's Moreland reached first on a single to the pitcher and scored on an error by the second baseman.
With a 1-0 lead heading into the fourth inning, the Hurricanes scored an addition two runs in the fourth and fifth innings as the batters singled to get on base and scored on a single and pass ball, respectively. Finally in the seventh Georgia Southwestern posted its final run to take the four run victory.
