No.4 Lander Ends Season For Lady Braves
GREENWOOD, S.C. – The UNCP women's basketball team wrapped up its season in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as nationally-ranked Lander shot 45.2 percent from the field and had four players in double-digits in taking an 80-53 victory on Wednesday night in Horne Arena.
Lander's (27-2) Jasmine Judge scored a game-high 18 points as she was 50 percent from the field and 3-point line as well as 100 percent from the foul line. Ciara Lyons contributed 11 points, while Brianna Webb and Kaylyn Small each registered 10 points apiece for the Lady Bearcats.
The Lady Braves (12-15) were held to their lowest shooting percentage of the season at 24.6 percent. DeDe Cotten led the Lady Braves with 13 points while JaToya Kemp grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Anya Knower and Talena Faison each registered nine points. The Black and Gold out-rebounded the Lady Bearcats 52-40.
The Lady Braves scuffled to connect a basket until Cotten drained the first field goal as the Lady Braves were held to 20 percent shooting from the field in the first five minutes. Lander quickly used two 3-pointers by Judge to pull away from UNCP on a 12-4 run in the beginning of the contest from which UNCP wouldn't recover.
The Lady Bearcats used impressive defense to hold the Lady Braves to 15.2 percent from the field as UNCP entered halftime trailing 40-17. The Black and Gold was able to score 36 additional points in the second half but the Lady Braves could not keep up with the offensive strength of the hosts.
"We came out tentative, not aggressive, not strongly attacking the basket which set the tone for the game and we never recovered once we were down ," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "We are losing six seniors which requires the returners for next season to step up and get stronger so we can build upon this season."
The Lady Braves conclude their season with an overall 12-15 record, including an 8-10 record in conference play.
