UNCP, Queens To Meet In Nonconference Matchup
PEMBROKE – Coming off a season opening win over Coker on Tuesday, the UNCP women's basketball team looks to take on nonconference opponent Queens on Saturday in the Oven Athletic Complex at 2 p.m.
UNCP (1-0) utilized 22 turnovers by the Cobras to close out the match with a 13 point lead as three Lady Braves registered double-digit points in the 62-49 win. Senior DeDe Cotten led the team with a game-high 13 points, while Domonique Washington and Jasmine Hairston collected 12 apiece.
The Lady Braves allowed Coker to take a quick 5-0 lead at the 16:43 mark, and extend it to 18-5 with less than 10 minutes less to play in the first half. Junior Courtney Bolton started the UNCP comeback on a jumper as UNCP drained 18 points to tie the game up at the half with a score of 23-23.
The Cobras again opened up the half by scoring first, but UNCP took the first lead of the game on a layup by Bolton. The lead continued to bounce back and forth as it was tied five times until UNCP took the final lead at the 7:48 mark on a layup by newcomer Taylor Gallentine. Washington put the squad up by its largest lead at 13 on a made foul shot with less than 20 seconds in the game.
Queens (0-2) struggled in its opening games by taking a 72-63 loss to Johnson C. Smith before falling 69-49 to Catawba. On Tuesday Shonice Pettaway scored 20 points and collected seven rebounds to lead the Royals offences but it was not enough to post the season opening win. Queens returned on Tuesday only to receive another loss despite Dyonna Battle leading the Royals with 11 points, while Sarah Myatt posted a team-high under the basket pulling down 11 rebounds.
UNCP and Queens will meet for the eighth time on Saturday in a series in a series completely controlled by the Lady Braves. The Black and Gold will bring a seven-game winning-streak into the game. The last meeting between the two teams was in the 2005-06 season in Charlotte as the UNCP was victorious with a 20-point lead.
