UNCP To Face Off With Region Rival Wingate

PEMBROKE – The Lady Braves look to get back in the winning column after falling to Queens on Saturday, as the UNCP women's basketball squad is set to face off with region rival Wingate in the Cannon Complex on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

UNCP (1-1) attempted a comeback after being down by 13 points in the first half but ended up one point short of overtime play as Queens claimed the 56-55 victory over the Lady Braves on Saturday. Senior Domonique Washington led the Black and Gold's offense and defense with a career-high 20 points and seven rebounds, while Anya Knower tied her career best with 10 points. 

Knower was 100 percent from the free throw line as she brought UNCP to within one point on a layup at the 00:41 mark and again on two made free throws with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game. UNCP finished shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Wingate (1-1) started the season with an 84-59 victory over Winston-Salem State as guard Nikki Burton drained 25 points on Friday and 21 points on Saturday in the two-day tournament. The Lady Bulldogs fell to host Johnson C. Smith by one point in a 73-72 loss due to being out rebounded during the match. Despite having a better shooting percentage overall, Wingate suffered at the 3-point line and the charity stripe.

UNCP and Wingate will meet for the 40th time on Tuesday in a series in a series controlled by the Lady Bulldogs. The Black and Gold are on the winning side of things after defeating last season to Wingate who holds a 22-17 series advantage going into the game.
