Consistent Shooting Sends Lady Braves Past Montevallo, 58-49
PEMBROKE – Using three players in double-digit scoring including senior Domonique Washington with a game high 18 points, UNCP was able to snap its four-game losing streak this season with a 58-49 victory over visiting Peach Belt Conference opponent Montevallo on Saturday afternoon.
Washington was only two points away from matching her career high in scoring as she was 6-of-11 from the field and 5-of-8 from the foul line. The Lady Braves (5-8, 2-3 PBC) registered an overall 40.8 percent shooting from the field including a 47.8 percent shooting in the second half. Junior Amelia Partin posted her career-high in scoring with 14 points, while junior Courtney Bolton added 12 points.
Despite being outrebounded by Montevallo (5-7, 0-3) 43-32, UNCP forced the Lady Falcons to commit 19 turnovers compared to 13 by the Black and Gold. Freshman Jazmine Kemp pulled down a team-best eight rebounds, and senior DeDe Cotten tallied five assists, one block and two steals.
A three-pointer by Washington gave UNCP its largest lead of the first half at the 11:07 mark even though the Lady Falcons posted the first points of the game. With a difficult start to the first half, the Lady Braves churned out momentum in the final 20 minutes to capture the lead for the remainer of the game with 17:34 left to play. The game saw the lead change three times and a tied ball game on five different occasions with the Lady Braves totaling their largest lead of 10 points.
Montevallo's Teanna Boxley led the offense with 18 points, while Davia Harris collected a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Falcons were 29.4 percent from the 3-point line and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe.
"It is good to get back into the win column," said UNCP head coach John Haskins. "I told our girls in the locker room after the game that if we score on a consistent basis in terms of execution and finishing plays, I think we could be a good team because our defense is good enough."
The Black and Gold will hit the road to compete against PBC opponent North Georgia (6-4, 1-1) on Thursday in the Memorial Hall Basketball Gymnasium in Dahlonega, Ga., with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m.
