No. 8 Lady Braves Third Following First Round Of Pinehurst Challenge

PINEHURST – The No. 8 UNCP Lady Braves golf squad sits eight strokes back of the lead in third place following the first round of the Wingate Pinehurst Challenge which is being held at the par-72, 5,835-yard National Golf Club in Pinehurst.

UNCP trails No. 22 Newberry for the team lead and sits just one stroke behind No. 16 St. Leo for second on the leaderboard. Jessica Tarbet of Carson-Newman and Jordan Hatch of Saint Leo carded matching 74's to lead the 18-team field following the opening round.

Sophomore Shauna Walor followed up her win at the AASU Lady Pirate Invitational on March 6-7 with a first-round 76, which left her two strokes off the lead in a tie for fourth heading into Tuesday's second round.

Freshman Dana Watkins ended her day with an 80, to finish second on the squad and in a tie for 16th on the individual leaderboard.

Sophomore Meghan Moore and senior Katja Dammann opened with twin 82's to sit in a tie for 27th with two other competitors and freshman Kelly Sumner followed back by two strokes to head into the final round in a tie for 36th.

The tournament will conclude with Tuesday's final round.
