No. 16 Lady Braves Take Team Title At CenturyLink Invite

GREENSBORO – The No. 16 UNCP women's golf team bested the field by nine strokes during the second round to take top honors by 21 strokes at the CenturyLink Invitational, which was held at the Lane Tree Golf Club in Greensboro on Tuesday.

The Lady Braves backed up their record-setting 2010-11 campaign with a tournament victory in their first event of the year and they have now won six of their last seven tournaments dating back to last season. They placed each one of their golfers inside the top 10 overall finishers on the par-72, 5,807-yard course.

Reigning Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Dana Watkins led the squad after a second-round 77 moved her from a tie for seventh overall after the first round to third at the conclusion of the tournament. The third-place finish was the second highest of Watkins career, and was also the best since she finished in a tie for second at the AASU Lady Pirate Invitational on March 6-7 last season. She now has three top-five finishes in her career.

Sophomore Meghan Moore nabbed her seventh career top-five finish after finishing in a tie for fourth overall. She followed up an opening-round 78 with an 80 on Tuesday.

Junior Shauna Walor stumbled a bit during the second round with an 84, but her first-round 75 was enough to keep her in sixth overall and give her the 13th top-10 finish of her career.

Sophomore Kelly Sumner finished in a tie for seventh overall – the second top-10 finish of her career – after she carded an 81 on the second 18 holes, and newcomer Lizzie Bundy started her UNCP career off with a top-10 finish after she finished in a tie for ninth overall.

Junior Jenn Crow, competing as an individual, finished with her second career top-10 finish with round scores of 80 and 83.

UNCP will next be in action on September 26-27 at the Tusculum Fall Classic in Greeneville, Tenn.
