Lady Braves Ninth After Opening Round Of NCAA Super Regional Two
PACE, Fla. – Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Meghan Moore carded a 5-over-par 77 to lead the 11th-ranked UNCP women's golf team to a ninth-place standing after the opening round of the talent-heavy NCAA Super Regional Two on Sunday afternoon in northwest Florida.
Second-ranked Florida Southern (302; +14) holds a one-stroke lead over third-ranked Lynn after day one of the three-day event, while eighth-ranked Barry (+17) is three strokes off the pace in third place. Two teams – top-ranked Nova Southeastern (+20) and 13th-ranked Saint Leo – share fifth place honors, No. 21 Tusculum (+22) is sixth and sixth-ranked Rollins (+24) is seventh. Ninth-ranked Newberry (+29), who held the lead for much of the front nine, is four strokes ahead of the Lady Braves in eighth place.
Moore's round has the junior sitting in a tie for 17th place after day one. Lizzie Bundy is in a tie for 31st place after registering an 80 on Sunday, while Shauna Walor and Jenn Crow both posted 80s and are among three players tied for 38th place. Kelly Sumner is tied for 45th place after carding an opening-round 85.
Although UNCP is the only league team participating at the event, two other PBC players are making a run at the individual title as well. Columbus State's Kimesha Anthony and Armstrong Atlantic's Jenna Birch both turned in a 75 on Sunday and share 10th place with two other players.
Nova Southeastern's Abbey Gittings, who came into the weekend sporting the nation's sixth-best stroke average (75.42), is atop the individual leaderboard after booking a 3-under-par 69 on Sunday. Barry's Nancy Vergara is three strokes back in second place.
The 54-hole event at the par-72, 6,154-yard Stonebrook Golf Club will resume on Monday morning. Tee times are set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
