Moore Makes Big Jump On Individual Leaderboard At NCAA Super Regional
PACE, Fla. – Junior Meghan Moore fired a 2-under-par and career-best 70 to jump into a share of fifth place on the individual leaderboard, but the 11th-ranked UNCP women's golf team remains in ninth place after the second round of the NCAA Super Regional Two on Monday afternoon.
Moore (77-70/147), who came into the day in a tie for 17th among the field of 48 individuals, matched Rollins' Kayla Sciupider for the second-lowest round of the day and the third-lowest of the tournament in putting herself in prime position to qualify for a berth into the NCAA Division II National Championships heading into Tuesday's third and final round. Shauna Walor (82-77/159) shaved five strokes off her day-one total to leap five spots into a share of 33rd place, while Kelly Sumner (85-77/162) whittled eight strokes off of her opening-round total to climb four spots and into a share of 41st place.
Second-ranked Florida Southern (+22) stretched its lead on the rest of the nine-team field out to seven strokes with another solid performance on Monday. Eighth-ranked Barry (+29) is in second, while top-ranked Nova Southeastern (+32) moved up a spot in the team standings, but remains nine strokes off the pace set by the Mocs. Third-ranked Lynn (+38) and 13th-ranked St. Leo (+41) round out the top five heading into the final 18 holes of the 54-hole event.
UNCP (+51) made up three strokes on the rest of the field and are within a stroke of overtaking ninth-ranked Newberry (+50) for eighth place. Sixth-ranked Rollins (+44) and 21st-ranked Tusculum (+48) are in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
The 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Super Regional Two will conclude on Tuesday with tee times set to begin at 8:30 a.m. The top three teams, along with the top three individuals not with an advancing team from, will earn a berth into the national championship round. The 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championships will be held May 16-19 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Ky.
