Williams Captures Title At Midwest Classic, Braves 10th

INDIANAPOLIS – All-American Mike Williams booked his second tournament title of the season, Shane Nolan finished fourth and Brendon Parker-Risk grabbed a fifth place laurel to highlight action for UNCP at the 33rd Annual Midwest Classic inside the University of Indianapolis's Nicoson Hall on Monday.

The place-winners helped UNCP accumulate 59 team points and a 10th place finish among the 25-team field at the prestigious event. Top-ranked Newberry took home the overall team title with 117 team points, while second-ranked Upper Iowa fell in line behind the Wolves with 115-1/2 team points. Three other nationally ranked teams finished among the top 10 as well.

Williams tallied a pair of takedowns in each of his two matches on the day, shutting out Ashland's Tommie Graszl in the semifinal round before edging out Maryville's Brett Rosedale in the 165-pound tournament championship.

Nolan, who was unblemished in Sunday's first round action as well, had his championship run ended on the heels of a 13-0 loss by major decision to second-ranked Dan Scanlan of Limestone. He recovered with a 3-1 decision over Lincoln's Matt Dwyer, but fell in the third place match to Maryville's Matt Baker.

Parker-Risk, who suffered his first loss of the season to Newberry's Taylor Knapp amid Sunday's action at the event, avenged that loss with an 8-2 win over Knapp in the fifth place match. He set up the rematch by splitting his two prior bouts, including a 6-2 win over Fort Hays State's Derek Koehn. Parker-Risk fell in the consolation semifinals on a tight 6-4 decision to Maryville's Joey Moorhouse.

The Braves will be in action again, Dec. 29-30, when they head to Lauderdale by the Sea, Fla., for the two-day Citrus Open on the southeastern coast of the Sunshine State.
