Wrestling’s Mike Williams Named UNCP Student-Athlete Of The Week

PEMBROKE – After registering an unblemished run through the 165-pound tournament in leading UNCP to a sixth place finish at the Citrus Invitational on Friday, Mike Williams has been named this week's UNCP Student-Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday.

Williams, Plainfield, N.J., native, tallied a perfect 5-0 record en route to grabbing Robert Del Rosa Most Outstanding Wrestler honors at the event in southeast Florida. Over the course of the two-day event, the two-time all-American booked three wins by major decision, including an 8-0 rout of John Carroll's Sean Gill in the title bout. He also registered a lopsided 15-3 major decision over Augsburg's Tom Teigen in his opening match on Thursday.

The tournament crown was his third this month after also capturing top honors at the Davidson Open on December 3 and the Midwest Classic on December 19. He also captured his second Most Outstanding Wrestler accolades, having also nabbed those laurels last season at the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. He has now captured five tournament titles in his career in the Black & Gold as well.

Williams, a junior, has accumulated a 59-9 (.868) record in Pembroke, including a 33-6 mark in tournaments. Of his 59 career victories, 11 have come by pin, 14 others have been by virtue of major decision and two have been the result of technical falls. He has booked a 19-1 record this season.
