Wrestling’s Daniel Ownbey Named UNCP Student-Athlete Of The Week

PEMBROKE – Having played a pivotal role in leading the UNCP wrestling team to a 2-2 record at the Super Region I Duals over the weekend, including a key upset of No. 14 West Liberty, newcomer Daniel Ownbey has been named this week's UNCP Student-Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday.

Ownbey, an Asheville native, tallied a perfect 4-0 record on the mat in Johnstown, Pa., including two wins by decision, one by technical fall and yet another by pin. Ownbey opened his weekend with a 4-2 decision over Shippensburg's Simon Rice, and then booked a perfect Friday evening by turning in a third-period pin (5:54) of Seton Hill's Andrew Fisher.

Only his Saturday performance would overshadow his Friday performance as the Enka High School product grabbed a 6-3 decision over third-ranked Nick Wykoff of West Liberty before closing out his stay in UPJ's Sports Center with a 20-4 technical fall triumph over host-Pitt-Johnstown's Douglas Maiorana.

Ownbey, who spent last season as a redshirt freshman at UNC Greensboro, has accumulated a 21-3 record in his first official season of collegiate competition. Of his 21 victories on the mat, three have come by pin and two others have come by virtue of technical fall.
