Nolan Named To Capital One Academic All-America Squad
TOWSON, Md. – Senior Shane Nolan captured a first for the UNCP wrestling program on Wednesday as the Girard, Pa., native was among 45 student-athletes named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division II Men's At-Large Team, the organization announced.
The announcement marked the first such honor for the Braves who finished in a tie for eighth place at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in March - the best finish for a UNCP wrestling team since the 2004-05 squad finished seventh in the team standings. Nolan was also accompanied on the squad by men's golfer Jordan Walor.
The Capital One Academic All-America® Division II Men's At-Large program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis,water polo and wrestling.
A two-time NCAA national qualifier, Nolan finished sixth in 197-pound tournament en route to his first all-American accolades. Having posted a 25-9 record on the mat this season, he finished his collegiate career with a 102-35 record, including a 33-5 record as a freshman at Mercyhurst Northeast. Of his 25 victories this season, three were via pin and a trio of others came by major decisions.
Nolan finished his career in Pembroke with a phenomenal 49-23 record against NCAA Division II competition and posted wins in 11 of the final 16 matches of his career.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
