UNCP Holds Third In NCAA Division II Region Poll
INDIANAPOLIS – The UNCP women's soccer team held third for the second consecutive week in the latest NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Southeast Regional poll released Wednesday by the NCAA.
The Lady Braves (15-2-2) are one of five Peach Belt Conference teams to grace the region poll. Columbus State (1st), Armstrong Atlantic (2nd) and North Georgia (6th) remained in the same position as last week, while Lander (8th) shifted up one spot. Rounding out the Top 10 are Belmont Abbey (4th), Lenoir-Rhyne (5th), Wingate (7th), Pfeiffer (9th) and Carson-Newman (10th).
UNCP defeated Montevallo, 2-0, in the first round of the PBC tournament on Tuesday evening at Varsity Grounds. Anna Svensson and Sheena Mature each netted first half goals for UNCP, while freshman goalkeeper Britney Bennett registered five saves in tallying her ninth shutout of the season. Bennett also received her fourth Goalkeeper of the Week nod this season on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Braves head to Evans, Ga., to finish out the PBC Tournament as they face No. 12 Columbus State (17-1-1) in the semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. The winners of both Friday contests, including the other semifinal matchup between Armstrong Atlantic and North Georgia, will meet in Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m.
