Soccer’s Britney Bennett Named UNCP Athlete of the Week

PEMBROKE – For her efforts in a pair of NCAA Tournament outings for the UNCP women's soccer team, including a career day in a 1-0 loss to 11th-ranked Armstrong Atlantic in the second round, freshman goalkeeper Britney Bennett has been named this week's UNCP Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced on Monday.

Bennett, a first team all-Peach Belt Conference honoree as well as the PBC Freshman of the Year, registered 19 saves and allowed just one goal in a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances over the weekend. The rookie from Seminole, Fla., grabbed seven saves in the opening round game against Pfeiffer en route to turning in her 10th shutout of the season, and then booked a season- and career-best 12 saves in a 1-0 loss to the nationally ranked Pirates on Sunday.

Bennett concluded her initial season in the Black and Gold with a 15-4-2 record and a 0.50 goals against average, having allowed just 10 goals in 1,799 minutes of playing time. She posted a conference-best 10 shutouts in 2010 and led the PBC with a 0.918 save percentage en route to establishing a new school record with 112 saves.
