Doubles Play Keys Visiting USC Aiken Past UNCP

 PEMBROKE – Despite surrendering 17 games, visiting USC Aiken swept through doubles play and then captured five singles victories in straight sets to chug past UNC Pembroke in women's collegiate tennis action on Saturday afternoon in Pembroke.

The triumph snapped a three-match losing streak for the Pacers (6-13, 1-9 PBC) who also captured their 13th-straight victory in the series with UNCP (6-13, 1-9). The setback was the third-straight league loss for the Braves since shutting out Montevallo at home on March 16.

Stephanie Humphrey and Margot Simon gave the Pacers their first team point of the day with a tight 8-5 victory over Jenna McGary at No. 1 doubles. The victory would spark a trio of doubles victories for the visitors who closed out doubles play with a pair of epic 8-6 outcomes. Franziska Regel and Melanie Schnieder topped UNCP's Hannah Herlocker and Christian Minnick on court No. 2, while Aiken's Andrea Cediel and Caitlyn Lawrence bested Maricel Quintero and Madeline DiNunzio at No. 3 doubles.

McGary used a 6-2, 6-0 victory in making short work of Humphrey at No. 1 singles that gave the Braves their first point of the day, but the Pacers took the remaining five singles matches on the day. Cediel yielded just one game in ousting Herlocker 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Schnieder clinched the team win with her 6-1, 6-1 victory over DiNunzio on court No. 5. Simon topped Winterbottom 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Regel surrendered four games as well in defeating Quintero 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.

Lawrence closed out the day with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 win over Minnick on court No. 6.

UNCP will continue a three-match home stand on Wednesday when it welcomes No. 14 Francis Marion (9-6, 5-5) to Pembroke for a 3 p.m. matchup at the UNCP Varsity Tennis Courts. Admission is free.
