Singles Sweep Leads UNCP To 8-1 Victory over Seton Hill
HILTON HEAD, S.C. – UNCP toughed out a pair of doubles victories and then won six singles matches in straight sets, to key an 8-2 victory on Thursday evening at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
Leigh-Anne McAfee and Hannah Herlocker gave the Lady Braves (6-7) a quick doubles point with an 8-0 shutout of Seton Hill's (5-7) Julia Madigan and Lauren Duffy on court No. 2, but the Griffins fought back to tie the score on Faith Finoli and Megan Hudak's 8-6 win over Mia Winterbottom and Shelby Bickel at No. 1 doubles.
UNCP would take a lead it would not relinquish a short time later, however, as Madeline DiNunzio and Beverly Vause outdueled Rebecca Cenkner and Maria Mastromatteo by an 8-4 score at No. 2 doubles.
The Lady Braves dominated singles play beginning with Winterbottom defeating Hudak 6-0, 6-1, in the featured match on court No. 1, followed by Monica Espitia's 6-0, 6-0 win over Mastromatteo at No. 6 singles. Herlocker surrendered just one game in topping Madigan 6-1, 6-0 on court No. 3, while DiNunzio exuded the same type of dominance in ousting Cenkner 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
McAfee's 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over Finoli, as well as Bickel's 6-3, 6-4 victory on court No. 4, would complete the scoring on the day.
The Braves will complete their annual Spring Break trip to Hilton Head on Saturday against Converse (3-7). Match time is slated for noon.
