Track & Field’s Jessica McDowell Named UNCP Athlete Of The Week

PEMBROKE – After registering a pair of first place finishes in leading the Lady Braves to a second place mark at the NCAA II Southeast Region Championships over the weekend, senior Jessica McDowell has been named this week's UNCP Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday.

McDowell, an Elizabethtown product, registered an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark and tied a school record in the long jump en route to her first of three first place honors on the day that helped UNCP log 124 points and finish second among an 11-team field. In addition to her phenomenal performance in the leaping event, McDowell set a new Lenoir-Rhyne track record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.36m en route to another first place honor. She would continue her phenomenal day with third place finishes in both the 100m and 200m dashes, while also running the final leg in the 4x100m relay team's second place finish.

McDowell has claimed 21 event titles during her career at UNCP and currently holds or is a part of six school record marks, including indoor records in the 55m hurdles (9.38), 60m dash (8.01) and long jump (5.41m). She also holds outdoor school records in the 100m hurdles (15.16) and long jump (5.69m), and was a part of a 4x400 relay team that posted a school record time of 3:55.72.
