Freshmen Record Top Finishes At Savannah State Eyeopener
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman Hana Metzinger finished in the top-5 in all three events she competed in to highlight the best performances for the UNCP women's track and field team on Saturday at the Savannah State Eyeopener to open the 2012 outdoor track season.
Metzinger was the only Lady Brave in the javelin throw as she captured a first place finish with a mark of 30.21m, along with a fourth place finish in the discus throw and a fifth place finish in the shot put with distances of 35.39m and 11.00m, respectively. Diricka Mitchell also competed in the discus throw and place seventh overall with a throw of 28.13m, and the shot put with a mark of 8.20m for an 11th place finish.
Newcomer Carrie Blankenship opened up her track season in the 5000m run as she finished second in the race with a time of 18:59.05 and was followed by teammate Livia Mahaffie with a time of 19:14.63 for a third place finish. Ashlee Doughty set a new personal best in the race with a time of 19:27.26 for a sixth place finish.
In the 800m run, Annette Sem was two seconds off her personal best time with a time of 2:34.00 as she finished 10th, while freshman Kendra Dorn posted a time of 2:44.10 in the race for an 11th place finish. Sem led the 1500m run for UNCP with a time of 5:17.24 for a seventh place finish, while Dorn placed 10th with a time of 5:23.43 in the race.
Icess Booker, Jazmiene Brown, Damita Ford, Mickeal Rhaney and Taliqua Medley competed in both the 200m and 400m dashes for the Lady Braves in their debut outdoor meet in a UNCP uniform.
The Lady Braves will take the next two week off and regroup at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington. The meet will span from March 9-10 and is hosted by UNC Wilmington.
