4x100m Relay Team Sets School Record At Regional Championships
HICKORY – The 4x100m relay team of Damita Ford, Icess Booker, Taliqua Medley and Jazmiene Brown set a new school record in the final day of competition at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Championships to help the UNCP women's track and field team place second in the meet.
The 4x100m relay team crossed the finish line first with a time of 47.88 seconds, while the 4x400m relay team ran the fastest time this season with a time of 4:08.41 for a second place finish.
Senior Livia Mahaffie collected two first place finishes in the 3000m steeplechase with a season best time of 11:55.52 and in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:05.86 for the first time in her UNCP career. Carrie Blankenship competed in the 3000m steeplechase for the first time in her career and finished second with at time of 12:56.57.
The Lady Braves notched the top three finishes in the 200m dash as Brown led the way with a time of 25.53 seconds, while Booker was second with a time of 25.89 seconds and Ford set a new personal best time of 25.96 seconds for a third place finish. Brown took home a second place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 59.35 seconds.
Booker and Ford placed first and second in the 100m dash preliminaries to qualify for the finals. Booker ran a time of 12.46 seconds for a first place finish, while Ford ran a personal best 12.56 seconds for a second place finish overall.
Freshmen Taliqua Medley and Shirley Ariwodo claimed new personal best times in the 400m hurdles with times of 1:10.15 and 1:11.05, respectively. Medley finished fourth and Ariwodo crossed in fifth place.
Junior Diricka Mitchell took home a second place finish in the hammer throw (40.04m) on Friday, a fourth place finish in the shot put (11.06m) and a fifth place finish in the discus throw (32.72m) on Saturday. Freshman Hana Metzinger finished second in the javelin (35.51m) and seventh in the hammer throw (31.79m) on Friday, and fourth in the discus throw (36.02m) and ninth in the shot put (8.70m) on Saturday.
In the 5000m run, Ashlee Doughty finished second, while Kendra Dorn finished right behind in third with time of 19:28.74 and 19:34.21 respectively. Junior Blair Long ran a time of 21:27.46 for a 16th place finish.
Annette Sem crossed the finish line in ninth with a time of 5:06.61 in the 1500m run, and third in the 10000m run with a time of 40:25.84 on Friday. Janay Moore ran a season best time of 2:28.01 in the 800m run for a 10th place finish.
The women's track and field team has concluded their season with a select few athletes continuing competition at Duke Twilight on May 6.
