Schneider, Varno, Lead Lady Braves Past Pacers, 3-2
AIKEN, S.C. – Despite being out-hit and
falling behind after losing the first set, the UNCP women's
volleyball squad rebounded to win three of the next four games in
defeating the USC Aiken Pacers by a 3-2 final on Saturday in Aiken,
The Lady Braves (9-4, 2-2 PBC) improve their record in the all-time series to 12-39, and the Pacers (6-7, 3-3 PBC) have now traded wins with UNCP in the series the last five times they have played.
UNCP had just a .133 hitting percentage compared to .200 by the Pacers, but the Lady Braves were able to register 11 service aces on the afternoon while USCA was only able to convert four. UNCP was worse in nearly every statistical category, but were still able to come away with the victory on the Pacer's home floor.
Juniors Allie Schneider and Tricia Varno led the squad with 13 and 11 kills, respectively, with Varno using a .476 attack percentage in compiling her total. Tiara Anderson finished her night with nine kills and senior Rachel Young added eight to the UNCP stat line.
Heather Bolwerk finished with 42 assists during the match, just three off of her season-high. The Appleton, Wis., native, also added eight digs, three assisted blocks and two service aces while playing in all five sets for the Lady Braves.
Marissa Baker, fresh off her 33-dig performance from the night before, finished her matchup with a team-high 15 digs. Schneider and Caitlin Haworth added 13 and 11, respectively, to the final tally.
UNCP returns home from their road trip for a matchup with Winston-Salem State on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the English E. Jones Center.
