No. 21 Bulldogs Top Lady Braves, 3-0
WINGATE – The UNCP women's volleyball team was overwhelmed by a strong hitting performance by nationally-ranked Wingate on Saturday evening in the final match of the Wingate Classic at the Cuddy Arena.
Wingate (3-0) finished with a 47 kills and .348 team hitting percentage compared to UNCP's (1-2) 23 kills. The Bulldogs registered 48 digs and eight team blocks, while the Black and Gold tallied 33 digs and two team blocks. The Lady Braves worked from behind in each of its three sets against the Bulldogs as Wingate took the victory in three straight sets, 25-15, 25-9, and 25-21.
The Lady Braves were led by junior Marissa Baker who was named to the all-tournament team. Baker tallied nine kills and seven digs in the match. Senior Ashlyn Rebok also contributed to the UNCP effort with 18 of the 23 team assists.
Susie Murach and Shelly Stumpff registered 11 and nine kills respectively, for the Bulldogs, while Iris Brewer added 23 assists. Rianne Lang led the team with 20 digs and Stumpff recorded the only solo block for Wingate.
UNCP will look to regroup and rebound as they open their 2012 home campaign on Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Elizabeth City State (1-2) in the English E. Jones Center.
