Cross Country’s Livia Mahaffie Named UNCP Athlete Of The Week

PEMBROKE – Days after shattering a 16-year old school record with a time of 18:59.4 in the 5K run en route to leading the UNCP women's cross country team to a second place finish at the Augusta State Tri-Meet, junior Livia Mahaffie has been named this week's UNCP Athlete of the Week, athletic department officials announced Monday morning.

Mahaffie, a Puyallup, Wash., native, shaved 31 seconds off her previous personal best time to cross the finish line in third place at the Augusta State-hosted event, while also finishing first ahead of seven of her teammates running in the meet as well. Mahaffie's time was four seconds faster than former Lady Brave Amy Locklear who booked a 5K time of 19:03 at the Christopher Newport Invitational during the 1994 campaign.

A newcomer on the Lady Braves squad after transferring from Clackamas Community College, Mahaffie has already improved her pre-UNCP personal best time in the 5K by nearly two full minutes. She has already tallied two times in the 5K this season that rank among the top 10 marks in school history.
