Women's Cross Country Adds Two For 2014-15 Season

PEMBROKE – UNC Pembroke interim cross country head coach Adarian Barr announced the addition of transfer Kelsey Spaziani and rising freshman Emily Vance to his 2014-15 women's cross country incoming class as both will continue their athletic and academic careers with the Braves.

The Braves wrapped up their 2013 season with eight new top-25 times in the 5K record book, and in the 6K as 13 of the 25 times were notched this season including school records in both distances. The Black and Gold finished in the top 5 in every race this season including race champion honors at the UNCW Seahawk Invitational.

"These two runners will be a great addition to our team," Barr said. "I am excited about the upcoming season and watching the athletes compete."

The Braves will release their 2014 schedule at a later date.

5-4, Hopatcong, N.J. (Hopatcong)
Attended the University of Bridgeport and played softball for coach Dawn Stearns … Named the ECC Rookie of the Week and finished the season with a .294 batting average.

HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Hopatcong High School under coach … A four-year letterman in softball and basketball, three-year letterman in cross country and grabbed one letter in field hockey … Awarded back-to-back all-conference laurels in cross country in her junior and senior years … Named female athlete of the year and an all-conference athlete in softball twice and basketball once.

PERSONAL: The daughter of Laurie and Tony Spaziani … Has two brothers, Willy and Joey, and one sister, Shelby … Ranked 41st out of her 176-member senior class with a 3.5 grade point average … An athletic training major at UNCP.

5-8, Sanford, N.C. (Overhills)
Prepped at Overhills High School under coach Wendy Vance and Zachary Bingham … A four-year letterman in cross country and track and field, two-year letterman in soccer and lettered once in volleyball … Finished 27th in the region individually and helped the team finish fourth at the conference championships as a senior … Ran her fastest 5K time as a junior in a time of 19:25 where she placed 23rd in the region and 24th at the state meet … Named all-conference in her junior year … Ran for Nat Carter on the Sandhills Running Club and placed fifth in the region and 11th at nationals in the steeplechase … Posted a time of 8:17.09 in the steeplechase … Was an indoor state champion in the 1000m run and named MVP for cross country and track and field.

PERSONAL: The daughter of Wendy and Scott Vance … Has one brother, Phillip … A member of the honor roll, HOSA and Senior Committee … A nursing major at UNCP.
