Volleyball Falls At Young Harris In Five Sets

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The UNC Pembroke volleyball team hit .201 from the net and had three blocks, but Young Harris hit .219 and logged eight service aces to win three straight sets and defeat the Braves 3-2 (25-27, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-12) on Friday evening inside the Harp Recreation & Commencement Center. 

The setback for the Braves (11-10, 8-9 CC) marked the first loss against Young Harris in the five-match series and are now 3-6 when playing on the road. The victory for the Mountain Lions (8-15, 5-10 CC) snapped a four-match skid and are now 4-4 when playing at home this season.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 27-25  UNC Pembroke went on a 6-0 run, including two kills from Addie Decker and one from Savannah Whaley to take a 7-3 lead. Young Harris closed the gap with Abby Schirm's consecutive kills, knotting the score at 16-16. The set remained closely contested as the teams traded points, with McKenna Hayes and Addie Decker delivering crucial kills for UNC Pembroke. With the score tied at 25, Savannah Whaley's kill and followed by a kill from Tyler Patterson secured a 27-25 victory for the Braves in the opening set. 
SET 2 I 25-18 After falling behind 2-0, UNCP rallied with five consecutive points, including a service ace by Brette Doile and a kill by Savannah Whaley, to take a 5-2 lead. Despite Young Harris cutting its deficit back to 16-9 midway through the set, UNC Pembroke maintained their momentum. Abby Peduzzi's kill brought set up set point, and Addie Decker secured the set with a final kill to give the Braves a two set lead. 
SET 3 I 18-25 The Braves initially took advantage with a 2-0 lead, capitalizing on consecutive attack errors by Young Harris. The Mountail Lions responded effectively, with Schirm and Lauren DeSilets contributing key kills to help level the score at 5-5. A series of errors by UNC Pembroke allowed Young Harris to build momentum. Amya Dryden and Kathryn Urbanek delivered pivotal kills, expanding the Young Harris lead. The final point came from an attack error by the Braves to give YHC the third set. 
SET 4 I 23-25 The set saw multiple lead changes, with Young Harris initially taking a 6-3 advantage following a series of attack errors by UNCP. The Braves fought back to tie the score at 10-10, aided by strong performances from Savannah Whaley and McKenna Hayes. The teams continued to exchange points, but UNCP went on a 6-1 run to take a 22-20 lead. However, YHC scored five out of the last six points to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
SET 5 I 12-15 Young Harris took control of the set early establishing a 7-3 advantage, but UNC Pembroke scored three straight points to trail 7-6. A kill from Addie Decker capped off a 5-4 scoring surge to knot the score at 11, but the hosts won four out of the final five points to win the match.
