Fourth Quarter Push Helps Women's Basketball Down Montevallo

PEMBROKE – The UNC Pembroke women's basketball team scored 20 points off of 19 Montevallo turnovers and used an 11-3 run midway through the fourth quarter to ground the Falcons, 60-50, on Saturday afternoon at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.

The result snapped a two-game skid for the Braves (6-7, 1-5 PBC) who picked up their first Peach Belt Conference victory in the process as well. It was the sixth loss in the last eight outings for Montevallo (4-9, 1-5) who fell to 1-6 all-time in the series with their PBC East counterparts.

Jonissa Monley scored a game-high 19 points on a perfect 9-for-9 performance from the field, while also cashing in on her second career double-double with 12 boards as well. Jasmine Huntley added 16 points and a quartet of steals for the Black & Gold as well, while Avery Locklear tallied 11 points.

Courtney Mckenzie registered a dozen points to lead Montevallo.

Monley gave UNCP its first lead of the second half, 31-30, on a contested layup just less than seven minutes into the third period, but it was Crystal Hicks that gave the hosts the lead for good on a 3-pointer with 1:03 left in the quarter. UNCP connected on four of its first five shots of the final stanza and eventually grabbed a nine-point lead, 56-47, on a perimeter shot by Mary Robinson at the 5:56 mark.

The Falcons shot just 32 percent from the field in the first half of play, but led 19-12 after Jasmine Thomas connected on a short jumper with just less than eight minutes left in the second quarter. The momentum would be short-lived for the visitors, however, as the Braves scored eight of the next nine points to tie things up five minutes later. Morgan Smith nailed a jumper with 17 seconds left before the break to give the Falcons a 24-22 advantage heading to the locker rooms.

The Braves will continue a three-game home stand on Wednesday when they lock horns with PBC East rival Francis Marion (13-2, 4-2) in the front half of a 5:30 p.m. "Camo Night" doubleader at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
