Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Too Much For Winston-Salem State

PEMBROKE – Senior Alex Bradley logged his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 assists to pace a quintet of Braves with double-figure scoring days as the UNC Pembroke men's basketball team picked up its second home win in four days with an 86-72 victory over Winston-Salem State.

It was the second-straight win for the Braves (3-1) who improved to 3-1 all-time against their in-state rival. The setback snapped a two-game win streak for the Rams (2-2) who fell to 1-2 away from Winston-Salem this season.

In addition to his career-high assist total, Bradley finished his day with four steals, four rebounds and one block in 37 minutes of action. Nigel Grant picked up his first career double-double as well with a game-best 21 points and 10 boards, while fellow newcomer Akia Pruitt just missed one of his own with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Robert Colon tallied 20 points to pace the Rams, while Jamel McAllister came off the bench to add 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field.

The Braves pushed a slim halftime lead out to double digits, 60-49, on a 3-pointer by Mike Smith with 10:24 left to play and the hosts kept the Rams at arm's length the rest of the way out. The hosts would eventually claim a game-high 14-point lead, 82-68, on a dunk by Grant at the 1:53 mark.

The back-and-forth first half featured three tie scores and four lead changes, but Pruitt's 3-pointer with 6:34 left before intermission sparked the Braves on a 10-0 run that would inevitably give them the lead for good. Winston-Salem State whittled the deficit back to one possession, 33-31, on a free throw from Carlos Ranks, but the hosts held off the visitors and took a 36-34 advantage into the locker rooms.

UNCP will close out a three-game home stand on Wednesday when they suit up to battle Chowan (1-0) at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m. Fans donating three canned food or non-perishable items will be admitted free.
