UNC Greensboro Edges Women’s Basketball In Overtime Thriller

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Jasmine Huntley drove the length of the court with under six seconds to play in regulation to force overtime for the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team, but Division I UNC Greensboro outscored the Braves 9-6 in the extra period to avoid the upset Tuesday evening at Fleming Gym, escaping with a 72-69 victory in an exhiibition contest.

The Braves (2-0), who led for over 23 minutes, saw four players score in double figures in their last exhibition of the season. Nadine Soliman led the charge with 24 points for the Spartans (3-2), who held a 54-39 rebounding advantage.

Down 57-55 with under two minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Huntley knocked down a 3-pointer for a one-point UNCP lead. After a short 4-0 run for the hosts, junior Nyla Allen hit one of her three from long range to knot the game at 61 with just 13 seconds to play.

When Bailey Williams banked in a runner with just six ticks on the clock, the hosts looked to avoid overtime and escape with a slim victory. But Huntley took the inbound pass and dribbled over 80 feet uncontested for a game-tying, buzzer beater to force an extra five minutes at 63-63.

UNCG opened overtime with a 7-0 run to grab a 70-63 lead, but the Black & Gold fought back thanks to a pair of threes from Allen and classmate Ebone Stevens, Allen's with under a minute to play. The hosts were called for a traveling violation with 33 seconds on the clock, giving the Braves one last possession, but a shot went awry, allowing the Spartans to clinch the game with a pair of free throws at the other end.

Allen poured in a team-high 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting, grabbed six rebounds and tacked on a trio of steals. Huntley came one board shy of her second-straight double-double, coming down with nine rebounds, complemented by 12 points, five assists and four steals. Stevens and sophomore Avery Locklear each added 10 points for the guests.

The Braves shot 40 percent from the field in a game that saw 10 lead changes and eight ties, while UNCG hit at a 35-percent clip. After going a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe in the first two periods, the Black & Gold knocked down just one of their five attempts down the stretch in the second half.

UNCP lifts the lid on the home slate at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court in Pembroke Sunday, a 1:30 p.m. tilt with Wingate. The Bulldogs (3-1) hold a 27-18 series advantage over the Black & Gold, dating back to the first meeting in 1979-80. Wingate, the defending South Atlantic Conference champion, has won three straight over UNCP, including a 79-61 affair last season.
