PEMBROKE - Leading by four with just over two minutes to play, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball squad looked primed to win its fourth Peach Belt Conference game of the season, but USC Aiken closed the game on a 6-0 run to leave town with a 57-55 victory on Wednesday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
The loss was the fifth-consecutive setback for the Braves (8-12, 3-10 PBC) and the fourth-straight game that was decided by four points or less. The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Pacers (9-13, 4-9 PBC) and now gives them wins in 16 of the last 19 meetings with UNCP.
Jonissa Monley tallied her seventh double-double in the last eight games with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while also dishing out four assists. Mary Robinson poured in a team-high 16 points on 3-of-6 shooting, all from behind the arc, and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Jasmine Huntley grabbed eight boards and added nine points.
Stephanie Bell paced USC Aiken with 16 points, while Kassy Johannsen tacked on 14 points and nine boards. Jasmine Coach came down with nine rebounds and Mariah Durian came off the bench for 11 points.
The Pacers jumped out to a 14-point lead in the second quarter, a 30-16 advantage with four minutes to play. The Black & Gold clawed back, trimming the lead to 30-25 at halftime and took their first second-half lead on a Robinson 3-pointer at the 2:33 mark in the third.
UNCP knocked down 7-of-9 shots in the third quarter, including 5-of-6 from long range, to take a 46-43 lead into the fourth.
Robinson connected on two free throws with 2:13 to play in the final frame, giving the Braves a 55-51 lead. UNCP would go 0-for-3 from the field in the final two minutes, while the Pacers were a perfect 3-for-3 in the final 2:01 in scoring the final six points.
USC Aiken shot 39 percent over the 40 minutes and the home team converted at a 34 percent clip. The Black & Gold knocked down 42 percent from 3-point range, while the Pacers made just 25 percent from deep. UNCP won the rebounding battle, 37-33, and committed 14 turnovers to USC Aiken's 12.
The Braves will be back in action Saturday, hosting PBC West member Young Harris (9-11, 4-9) on the front end of a 1:30 p.m. Play 4Kay twinbill at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
