Watkins Nets Golden Goal, Women’s Soccer Downs Georgia College

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. –The UNC Pembroke women's soccer team needed just 70 seconds and two shots to net the game-winning goal in overtime Wednesday night, after firing 23 shots in regulation in a 2-1 win over Peach Belt Conference (PBC) foe Georgia College at Bobcat Field.

The Braves (5-2, 3-0 PBC) run their winning streak to five, the longest since an eight-game streak in 2010. UNCP is the only PBC team yet to lose or tie a conference contest. The Bobcats (3-3-1, 1-3 PBC) have now dropped two in a row and three of their last four overall.

The game ender was set up by beautiful footwork from UNCP midfielder Mackenzie Wright, who dribbled down the left side past Bobcat defenders before firing a shot that was saved by a diving GC keeper. When the netminder was unable to prevent a rebound, Amber Watkins put a subsequent shot-on-goal, this time off the goalkeeper's fingertips and across the white line, allowing chaos to ensue. It was Watkins' first goal of the season and Wright's second assist.

"This win showed our mental fortitude and we learned a very valuable lesson tonight," head coach Lars Andersson said. "We found a way to win on the road in a hostile environment and that's what matters in the end."

The Black & Gold found themselves trailing for the first time in three weeks when Georgia College connected on a goal in the first five minutes of the game and held that lead through halftime.

"We got off the bus tonight and weren't prepared to compete the way we should have been in the first half," Andersson said. "We need to treat every trip like a business trip and that was not the case early on tonight. We looked completely out of sorts in the first half."

UNCP answered in the 55th minute when the Bobcats were called for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Wright stepped up and buried it into the back of the net, knotting the game at one with her first goal of the campaign.

"We changed some things up at halftime and the women came out flying in the second half," Andersson said. "They showed all the qualities and characteristics that we preach day in and day out. I couldn't be more proud of their performance in the final 45 minutes and overtime. It was like day and night from the first half of play."

The 25 shots from the Braves were a season high, 17 of those coming in the second stanza. Division II Player of the Week Gina Ryan saw her shutout streak come to an end Wednesday, but the freshman saved seven of eight Bobcat shots-on-goal, enough to push her record to 5-1 this season.

Wright attempted a team-high nine shots, a season high for her, while teammate Stacey Scott fired five. Carly Rochelle and Kristina Stevenson each recorded three shots for the Black & Gold.

"This team grew exponentially today," Andersson said. "Hopefully we can learn from this and use this momentum to propel ourselves forward into some key upcoming league games."

The Braves wrap up a short, two-game road trip with a tilt at Georgia Southwestern Saturday at 11 a.m. The Hurricanes (3-5, 0-3 PBC) have lost five of their last six after a 2-0 start to the year. UNCP is a perfect 10-0 all-time against GSW, including a 7-0 drubbing last season in Pembroke.
