AUGUSTA, Ga. – UNC Pembroke women's basketball sophomore
Avery Locklear has been awarded a spot on the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) All-Academic squad, the league office announced Wednesday.
Locklear, a Landis, North Carolina native, is one of 25 league women's basketball players laureled with 2016-17 all-academic status. She owns a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in history at UNCP. This marks the ninth-consecutive season at least one Black & Gold player has been named to the distinguished list.
The sophomore has seen action in all 23 games this season and pours in 5.5 points per contest. Locklear is second among Braves in 3-pointers made this season with 27 and scored a season-high 16 points in a Dec. 14 tilt at Mount Olive. She set a career high in free throws made (five) and free throws attempted (six) in a Nov. 14 win over Coker and has also tied career best this season in field goals made (six), 3-point field goals made (four), 3-point field goals attempted (nine), assists (four), and blocks (one).
The All-Academic team is part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the playing surface. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team's events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility. The Peach Belt Conference Sports Information Directors oversee the program.
Locklear and the Braves are back in action Wednesday at PBC East foe Armstrong State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Alumni Arena in Savannah, Georgia.
