ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – Down 16 with one quarter to play, the UNC Pembroke women's basketball team looked to have yet another late comeback in its back pocket, but host Flagler did not allow the Braves to move closer than seven in the fourth in a 63-50 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) victory Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym.
The defeat marks the sixth-consecutive road setback for the Braves (15-10, 10-8 PBC), who have now dropped four of their last five overall. Flagler (5-20, 3-15 PBC) has now won back-to-back games for the second time this season and improves to 5-3 at home against UNCP all-time.
The Saints closed the third period on a 6-0 run to open up their largest lead of the game and haul a 48-32 lead into fourth-quarter action. The Black & Gold responded with a 9-0 run early in the final stanza to pull within seven at 50-43, with six of the nine points from junior
Nyla Allen. UNCP was down just eight (53-45) with four minutes to play, but Flagler scored the next four points in a two-minute span to extend the advantage to 12 with under two to play.
Coming off a career-high 20 points Wednesday, Allen cashed in a team-best 17 on 6-for-11 shooting Saturday and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior
Brianna Baham chipped in 12 points, while
Jonissa Monley and
Avery Locklear each tacked on eight. Locklear matched a career high with six rebounds. The Braves were without starting point guard and third-leading scorer (9.1/game)
Jasmine Huntley due to injury.
Saturday's 50-point offensive performance was the second-lowest of the season for the Braves, who shot 32.2 percent from the field (19-for-59). UNCP converted just 50 percent of its free throws (7-for-14), its lowest mark of the campaign, but committed less than 10 turnovers (nine) for just the fourth time this season.
Flagler's 45 rebounds are its most in the last 11 outings and the Saints knocked down 16 of their 18 free-throw attempts, an 88.9-percent clip.
The Braves wrap up the 2016-17 regular season with a home tilt against Francis Marion Wednesday. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. on the front end of a women's-men's doubleheader at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court. The Patriots (16-11, 11-7 PBC), winners of seven straight, have clinched the No. 2-seed in the PBC East Division, while the Black & Gold will boast the East's No. 3-seed come league tournament time.
Wednesday night will serve as senior night, as five Braves (Huntley, Monley,
Airico Williams,
LaShonda Prichard and
Phoenicia Lawson) each play their final regular-season game in Pembroke.
