FINAL RESULTS
WALLACE – If shooting a pair of sub-305 rounds on the same day for the first time in program history wasn't enough on Monday, the UNC Pembroke golf squad turned in the 11th-best round in school history (301) Tuesday to grab its second title of the season at the Sunoco Campbell Oil Classic in Wallace.
Black & Gold head coach
David Synan was quick to show his gratitude at the conclusion of the 54-hole tournament.
"None of this would be possible without the tremendous support from Sunoco, Campbell Oil and Mac Campbell himself," Synan said. "We couldn't have asked for a better tournament and we look forward to future installments of this exceptional tournament presented by Sunoco."
The Braves (+44) carded the best final round in the nine-team field to stake claim to a five-shot victory over second-place Carson-Newman (+49). Tuesday's triumph gives UNCP at least two tournament wins in every season dating back to 2011. Queens (+59) fell into solo third, while Mount Olive (+63) and Division I Bucknell (+76) round out the top five.
Black & Gold freshman
Katy Flax (+1) swatted off the nerves of a 36-hole lead and fired a final-round 73 to win her first collegiate tournament and become just the second freshman in UNCP history to claim an individual title. Flax led the field par-5 scoring this week and rolled in a tournament-best 11 birdies.
Freshman
Megan Munroe (+13) shot even-par 72 Tuesday to leap 13 spots into a tie for eighth in the 54-player field. Junior
Savannah Thompson (+17) carded her best round of the tournament Tuesday with a 76 to tie for 14th, while senior
Ashlii Thompson (+18) finished in a four-way tie for 16th after a final-round 80. Sophomore
Alexandria Bare (+21) also carded 80 on Tuesday and shared 22nd with one other player.
Playing as an individual, freshman
Casey Burroughs (+13) shot 78 in the final round to tie for eighth. Burroughs' 2.92 average on the par 3's was second best in the field this week. Junior
Amanda Levy (+26) tied for 35th with a final-round 82, freshman
Meredith Godwin (+34) grabbed a share of 45th after shooting 85 Tuesday and senior
Gabby Milam (+45) carded a tourney-best 81 to finish 52nd.
UNCP will now turn its attention to the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Championship April 14-16 in St. Augustine, Fla. The 54-hole tournament will feature 18 holes each day at the World Golf Village Slammer & Squire Course. The Braves won the league title in 2014 before finishing fifth and fourth the past two seasons.
