Matt Davis grabbed male student-athlete of the year honors, soccer's Jasmine Senécal-Guzman was named the female student-athlete of the year and football head coach
Shane Richardson was decorated with Dan Kenney Coach of the Year accolades to highlight the 4
th Annual Golden Braves Awards on Monday evening at Lumbee Guaranty Bank Court.
Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. W. Stewart Thomas was honored with the Changing Lives Through Education award, while Dr. Robin and Rebecca Cummings were the recipients of the Braves Club Members of the Year honor. Monday's event was attended by UNCP's coaches, staff and more than 400 student-athletes.
Davis shattered a school record and led the Braves in scoring with 119 points this season, including 20 in a home victory over Fayetteville State in early September. He finished his senior campaign with a 27-for-32 success rate on field goal attempts, including an astounding 6-for-7 clip on tries from 50 yards or better, while also successfully canning 38 of his 39 PAT attempts. A three-tiered kicking threat, he also averaged 41.02 yards on 43 punts (10 punts of at least 50 yards), and also averaged 62.7 yards on 70 kickoffs (32 touchbacks).
Senecal-Guzman was the anchor of a UNCP back line that racked up nine shutouts this season, second most in the Peach Belt Conference, and allowed an average of just 0.96 goals per game. She led the Braves in minutes played this season at 1,586 while starting all 17 games. A first team all-PBC selection, Senecal-Guzman attempted 11 shots in 2016. She was named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Region team and was also the first UNCP women's soccer player to be named an NSCAA Scholar All-American.
Richardson led the Braves to a 10-victory season, setting a new benchmark for the program. Its 10-2 (.833) record is the best mark (victories, winning percentage) for an NCAA playoff team in Pembroke. UNCP's win over then-No. 19 Valdosta State in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Division II Playoffs marked the first playoff victory in the 10-year history of the football program at UNC Pembroke, while his 2016 squad boasted four all-Americans as well, including Davis who became just the second player in program history to garner all-American accolades from the Associated Press.
