No. 21 Baseball Back On Track, Holds Off Armstrong State In Opener
SAVANNAH, Ga. –
Ethan Baucom's one-out RBI single helped the 21
st-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team pad its lead out to double digits, but the Braves had to hold off a late-inning outburst by Armstrong State for the second-straight day in order to secure a series-clinching 14-11 win over the Pirates on Saturday afternoon.
It was the 21
st victory in the last 24 outings for the Black & Gold (37-12, 15-8 PBC) who secured at least a share of third fourth place in the final Peach Belt Conference standings. The Pirates (22-25, 5-18) have now dropped three of the last four series matchups with UNCP.
Saturday's victory in Savannah also handed UNCP its 13
th series victory of the season.
Roberto Rivera tripled and drove in four runs to highlight a 4-for-5 day that led the Braves, while
Ethan Baucom doubled and drove in three runs on a 2-for-4 hitting line.
Nick Salisbury (2-for-4, 3 R),
Jarratt Mobley (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and
Lucas Ledford (2-for-5, 2 R) turned in a pair of hits for the visitors as well.
Three players racked up four hits apiece for Armstrong State, including Mark Felton who drove in three runs on a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate. Mike Warren (1-for-5) pushed his hitting streak out to 28 games with a leadoff single in the eighth.
Kyle Boraski (6-2) won for the sixth time in his last seven starts with six effective innings from the hill and a trio of strikeouts.
Hank Simpson inherited a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the eighth and recorded the game's final four outs to tally his fourth save of the campaign. Aaron Bentley (4-2) surrendered eight runs (seven earned) on six hits and three walks in just 2-1/3 innings to take the loss for the hosts.
The Braves led 10-2 by the end of the third inning, but extended its lead out to 13-3 with three more scores in the sixth. The Pirates pushed across two runs in the home half of the fifth, and got within striking distance by scoring three more runs in the seventh to make it a 13-8 game.
Armstrong State chased reliever
Dale Masterson from the hill with consecutive RBI singles with two outs in the eighth. UNCP added an insurance run on
River Ryan's sac fly in the ninth, and the Pirates put together another rally in the ninth, but could only salvage one run on Ryan Patterson's one-out RBI single.
The Braves will look to secure their fourth-straight weekend sweep on Sunday when they finish out their set with Armstrong State at Pirate Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
