DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Alex
McManus drilled a shot past North Georgia's Jessica
English with less than a minute left in overtime to cap off a
valiant effort by injury-plagued UNCP and give the Lady Braves
their first Peach Belt Conference Victory of the season with a 2-1
triumph over the Lady Saints on Saturday afternoon.
The win snapped a five-game league winless skid for the Black
and Gold (8-5-1, 1-4-1 PBC) and put an end to a four-game losing
streak in league road games. The setback was the fourth loss in the
last six outings for North Georgia (6-6-1, 0-4-1).
Lefke Boysen highlighted a competitive first half with a 40th
minute penalty kick to give the visitors a 1-0 edge heading into
the intermission, but the Lady Saints came out with a purpose in
the second stanza and tied the score just 13 minutes in when
Brittany Bruner redirected a Casey Smith direct kick past a diving
Whitney Beverly.
North Georgia would fall on the better end of a 19-6 shot
disparity in the second half but, nonetheless, the squads headed
into extra time knotted at one score apiece. Both teams would trade
two shots in the first nine minutes of the first overtime but UNCP
got a second chance on its latter opportunity when McManus punched
in the Golden Goal moments later.
UNCP will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when the
squad travels to Hickory to take on region rival Lenoir-Rhyne
(6-6-2) in a 2 p.m. tilt at Bears Field.
